Brandable domains โ invented short pronounceable names like Spotify, Algolia, Notion โ are the gold standard for startups. Generators produce thousands of candidates instantly. The historical bottleneck has been verifying which are actually available. That bottleneck is now solved.

Two reasons brandable names dominate modern startup naming:
- .com availability: dictionary words are 99% gone. Brandable invented words still have plenty of available .coms.
- Trademark clarity: an invented word has no prior trademark conflicts. A descriptive word ("CloudFinance") is harder to defend and easier to lose in a dispute.
The downside: invented names need marketing investment to build recognition. "TaxSoftware.com" tells you what it does in 0.5 seconds; "Algolia" doesn't. That's a brand-marketing problem, not a naming problem.
Generator settings that work
For generators like NameMesh, Namelix, and LeanDomainSearch:
- Length: 5-9 characters total. Below 5 is rare and expensive; above 9 is hard to remember.
- Syllables: 2-3 maximum. Spotify (3), Stripe (1), Algolia (4 but flowing).
- Avoid awkward consonant clusters. "Brndfy" looks cool, sounds like nothing.
- Filter to .com only at this stage. Adding TLDs adds noise, not value.
From a single seed word ("teach"), Namelix can produce ~500 candidates in under a minute. NameMesh ~1,000. Combined unique set: ~1,200-1,500.
The bulk-check phase
Take the combined generator output, dedupe, and paste 1,500 candidates into the extension. Run with .com only filter. ~9 minutes. Filter results to available โ typically 200-400 survivors out of 1,500 (brandables have higher availability rates than dictionary words).
From 200-400, manual filter to a personal shortlist of 15-25 by feel: pronunciation, association, mouthfeel.
Common pitfalls
- "Looks great until you say it out loud": always say candidates aloud. "Algolia" works because it flows; "Glogiia" doesn't.
- Hidden negative associations: Google your finalists. "Lasik" is a great-sounding word but means corrective eye surgery to most people.
- Too close to existing brand: "Sloak" is generated by every brandable tool; "Slack" is taken. The risk: trademark dispute. Run TESS even on invented names.
- Anti-features: double letters in awkward spots ("Streamm"), .io for a non-tech consumer brand, weird capitalization patterns.
When to pay for a brandable
Marketplaces (Brandbucket, NameVault, Squadhelp Premium) sell pre-cleared brandable .coms for $1K-15K. Reasons to pay:
- Time pressure (launching in 2 weeks).
- You've exhausted free generators and nothing fits.
- You found a specific marketplace name with strong logo + screenshot bundle and don't want to design from scratch.
None of these reasons applies if you have 3 hours and a willingness to follow the free workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
How available are brandable .coms really?
In our tests, ~25-35% of generator output is .com-available. From 1,500 candidates expect 350-500 available, of which 15-30 will be genuinely good.
Are generator-produced names trademarkable?
Yes โ invented words are highly trademarkable, often more so than descriptive names. Run TESS on your final 5 to be sure.
Should I pay $5K+ for a marketplace brandable?
Only if free generators have not produced anything you love after 2-3 hours of focused work, or you have a hard launch deadline.
Why does Namelix charge for some logos?
Generation is free; Namelix's paid tier is for the logo design files. The names themselves are free to register.
How do I know if a name is too weird?
Read it aloud to 3 people who haven't seen the spelling. If 2/3 mispronounce it, it's too weird.
